Demonology: A Structured Study of the Spirits, Hierarchies and Grimoires
Demonology is the systematic study of demons: their names, hierarchies, offices and the historical texts that describe them. It spans theological demonology, which classified spirits within a religious cosmology, and practical demonology, which works with them directly through grimoire method. This pillar is a structured curriculum rather than a list — the major spirits, the primary source texts, the ranking systems, and a course, grimoire and article for each intelligence studied.
This pillar is the entry point to our whole demonology curriculum: the principal spirits, the texts they come from, and every course, grimoire and article we publish on the subject.

What demonology is — and what it is not
Demonology is the systematic study of the spirits classified as demons: their names, their ranks, the offices attributed to them, and the textual history through which those attributions reached us. It has two distinct branches that are frequently confused. Theological demonology is a classificatory discipline, developed largely within medieval and early modern Christianity, that catalogued spirits in order to define and police the boundaries of orthodoxy; King James VI's Daemonologie of 1597 is the best-known example in English. Practical demonology is the working tradition preserved in the grimoires, concerned with contact, method and result. The search term itself is now shared with a video game, which is worth stating plainly: if you arrived here from that, this is the other thing — an academic and practical study programme with primary sources, structured courses and written coursework.
How demon hierarchies are organised
There is no single canonical hierarchy. Different texts impose different structures, and knowing which structure you are reading prevents most beginner confusion. The Ars Goetia ranks its seventy-two spirits by court title — king, prince, duke, marquis, earl, president, knight — with legion counts indicating breadth of influence. The Grimorium Verum and the Grand Grimoire organise around a small number of superior spirits with subordinates beneath them. Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum presents an infernal court with named officers of state. Later occult writers, notably in the nineteenth century, produced synthetic hierarchies that combined sources freely. None of these systems is the true one; each is a map drawn by a particular tradition for a particular purpose, and the useful skill is reading each on its own terms rather than forcing them into agreement.
Demonolatry, evocation and devotional practice
Demonolatry is not a synonym for demonology. Demonology studies; demonolatry venerates. The demonolater maintains an ongoing devotional relationship — offerings, a dedicated space, regular contact, a personal liturgy — where the evocator conducts discrete, bounded operations with a stated purpose and a formal close. Both approaches appear among serious practitioners, and both are taught here as legitimate methods with different demands. Devotional practice asks for consistency over years and tends to produce depth in a small number of relationships. Evocatory practice asks for precision, preparation and record-keeping, and tends to produce breadth. Students frequently begin evocatory and drift devotional as one or two relationships deepen. What matters is that the choice is conscious rather than accidental, because the two methods have different failure modes and different safeguards.
Reading the primary sources critically
Serious demonology is a documentary discipline before it is an experiential one. The Lemegeton, the Grimorium Verum, the Grand Grimoire, the Book of Abramelin and the Pseudomonarchia all descend from overlapping manuscript families, and their spirit lists borrow, mutate and contradict one another. Names are transliterated inconsistently across Hebrew, Greek, Latin and vernacular sources; offices migrate between spirits; entire entries are duplicated under variant spellings. A student who treats any one edition as authoritative will eventually be blindsided by another. The method taught here is comparative: read at least two source traditions for any spirit you intend to work with, note where they agree, note where they diverge, and record your own observations as a third column. Over time that comparative habit builds genuine expertise rather than borrowed opinion.
Ethics, safety and the cooperative stance
This Academy teaches demonology on an explicitly cooperative footing. Spirits are approached as intelligences with their own character and consent, addressed courteously, engaged through clear agreements and thanked. The coercive register of the classical texts is treated as historical context, not as instruction. That is an ethical position, and it is also a practical one: fear-driven practice generates unstable results, obsessive rumination and abandoned study, while respectful practice is repeatable and reviewable. The standing safeguards are simple and non-negotiable — do not work under acute emotional distress, define the scope and duration of a working before it begins, keep a written record, close formally, and leave time between workings. Students in crisis are directed to human support first; magical practice is not a substitute for medical or psychological care.
A structured path through this pillar
Below, each spirit studied at the Academy is listed with the article that introduces it, the course that trains the relationship in depth, and the grimoire that documents the tradition around it. A workable sequence for a new student: read the foundational articles on hierarchy and method, complete one preparatory course on ritual discipline and record-keeping, then select a single spirit whose office matches a real and present need. Work that one relationship through a full course cycle before opening a second. Students who follow that sequence typically reach a stable, evidence-based practice within a few months; students who collect names without completing anything typically do not. The catalogue is a curriculum, and it rewards being treated as one.

Frequently asked questions
What is demonology?
Demonology is the systematic study of demons — their names, hierarchies, offices and the source texts that describe them. It includes theological demonology, which classified spirits within a religious framework, and practical demonology, the working grimoire tradition of contact and method.
Is demonology real, or is it just a video game?
The search term is now shared with a popular game, but demonology is a genuine historical and academic field with primary sources going back to the sixteenth century, and a living practical tradition. This pillar covers the field, not the game.
What is the difference between demonology and demonolatry?
Demonology studies demons; demonolatry venerates them. Demonolatry involves ongoing devotional relationship — offerings, a dedicated space, regular contact — while demonological practice can be purely scholarly or conducted through discrete, bounded evocations.
Who wrote the first book on demonology?
There is no single first book, but the foundational early modern texts are Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum of 1577 and King James VI of Scotland's Daemonologie of 1597. The grimoire tradition, including the Lemegeton, circulated in manuscript alongside them.
What is the demon hierarchy?
Different texts use different hierarchies. The Ars Goetia ranks spirits as kings, princes, dukes, marquises, earls, presidents and knights with legion counts; other grimoires organise around a few superior spirits with subordinates. No single hierarchy is canonical, and reading each source on its own terms is part of the discipline.
Do I need to be religious to study demonology?
No. Students here come from many backgrounds, including entirely secular ones. The Academy teaches source criticism, ritual method and cooperative relationship, and does not require adherence to any theology.
Is studying demonology dangerous?
Studied with structure, it is a disciplined practice. The recurring safeguards are: do not work in acute distress, define scope and duration in advance, keep written records, close every working formally, and never treat practice as a replacement for medical or psychological care.
Where should a beginner in demonology start?
Begin with the source-criticism and hierarchy material, then one preparatory course on ritual discipline and record-keeping, then a single spirit whose office matches a current, concrete need. Complete one relationship cycle before beginning another.
What are the best primary sources for demonology?
The Lemegeton or Lesser Key of Solomon, Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, the Grimorium Verum, the Grand Grimoire and the Book of Abramelin. Read at least two traditions for any spirit you intend to work with, since their lists borrow from and contradict each other.
Are demons evil?
This Academy does not teach an adversarial framing. The spirits catalogued in the grimoires are studied as intelligences with distinct domains and characters, approached cooperatively and with courtesy, and the moralising language of the historical texts is treated as period context rather than instruction.
