“The Stone is made from one thing.”
Sit silently for a moment and look at your life.
You believe you are many things — body, mind, emotion, past, future, success, failure, virtue, sin. A crowd. A marketplace. A constant traffic of identities. And because you experience yourself as many, you remain divided. And because you are divided, you feel incomplete.
The first secret says: all transformation comes from one thing.
Not two.
Not many.
Not something imported from the outside.
One.
This is not chemistry — this is a law of being.
You search everywhere for the missing key: in teachers, systems, relationships, techniques, sacred places. You move from method to method like a spiritual tourist collecting experiences. But the ancient alchemist laughs softly and says: the matter is already in your hands.
And the tragedy is — because it is so close, you cannot see it.
You are like a fish asking, “Where is the ocean?”
The alchemists describe the true matter as:
common
everywhere
touched daily
yet never recognized
What is more common than your own consciousness?
What is closer to you than your own awareness?
The work begins when you understand — not intellectually, but existentially — that you yourself are the material of transformation.
Not your beliefs.
Not your personality.
Not your social mask.
You.
Exactly as you are.
Your confusion is the prima materia.
Your restlessness is the prima materia.
Your desire, your fear, your contradictions — this is the substance.
Nothing has to be rejected.
This is where the alchemical vision is radically different from moral religion. Religion says: destroy the sinner and become the saint. Alchemy says: the sinner is the saint in an unrefined form.
The stone is not created — it is revealed.
Gold is not manufactured — it is liberated from what hides it.
So the first understanding is immensely relaxing:
you do not need to become someone else.
All becoming is postponement.
You only need to work on the one thing you have always been carrying — your raw, unobserved, unlived self.
Watch what happens when you stop trying to improve and begin to observe.
Anger arises — instead of condemning it or expressing it, you look into it.
Jealousy arises — you do not justify it, you do not suppress it, you watch its texture, its heat, its movement.
This watching is the beginning of alchemy.
Because now the many are returning to the one.
Ordinarily you say:
“I am angry.”
“I am sad.”
“I am happy.”
A thousand identities.
But when awareness enters, a shift happens:
Anger is there — but you are the one who sees it.
Sadness is there — but you are the space in which it appears.
Suddenly there are not many — there is one consciousness and many passing states.
You have found the matter.
And the moment the one is found, transformation becomes possible — because now energy is not wasted in inner conflict.
The alchemists insist the true matter is “despised.”
Why?
Because nobody values simple awareness.
People value complexity. They value rituals, rare substances, secret initiations, exotic experiences. The ego feels nourished by what is difficult and exclusive.
But to sit silently and watch your breath — the mind says, “This is nothing.”
To observe your thoughts — the mind says, “This is too simple.”
The Stone is rejected because it is too obvious.
The miracle is hidden in the ordinary.
You are looking for fireworks, and the truth comes like a small flame that has always been burning inside you.
Once you accept that the work is on this one substance — your own being — a great integration begins.
Then your body is no longer the enemy.
Your mind is no longer the enemy.
Your emotions are no longer the enemy.
All are phases of one energy.
And when the many are seen as one, a new quality appears — intensity without conflict.
This is what the alchemists call the hidden sulphur — the inner fire.
Your life up to now has been dispersion.
A little energy in desire.
A little in fear.
A little in ambition.
A little in regret.
Scattered.
The first teaching gathers your energy back to its source.
And when energy becomes one-pointed, transformation is no longer something you do — it begins to happen on its own, just as a seed starts sprouting when it is no longer divided.
You are that seed.
You have been trying to change the world, change others, change your circumstances — this is working on “many things.”
The alchemist works only on one:
the state of consciousness in which everything is experienced.
Change that — and everything is transmuted.
Gold and lead are not different substances in the ultimate sense — they are different organizations of the same essence.
In the same way:
The unconscious person and the awakened person are not two different beings — they are the same energy arranged differently.
So the first teaching is not a theory. It is a meditation:
Whenever you feel divided, return to the one who is aware.
Whenever you feel lost in the crowd of thoughts, remember the silent witness.
Whenever you try to escape yourself, stop — and enter yourself.
The stone is not far away.
The temple is not far away.
The laboratory is not far away.
You are the place.
You are the matter.
You are the fire.
You are the vessel.
And the moment this is not just understood but seen — even for a single second — the Great Work has already begun.
Because now the many have bowed down to the One.
