“Perfect blackness is the gate.”
(The sacred night of the soul — the mystery of Nigredo)
You have allowed something to melt.
Your certainties are no longer as hard.
Your identity is no longer as convincing.
The old structure has begun to dissolve.
And now you enter a space the alchemists describe with a shocking word:
Blackness.
Not light.
Not bliss.
Not illumination.
Black.
This is where many seekers become confused — because they were expecting heaven and they encounter night.
But this night is not a mistake.
It is the gate.
Before this, your spirituality was still supported by subtle ambitions:
to become peaceful
to become pure
to become awakened
to become special
Now even these begin to collapse.
Meditation feels dry.
Meaning disappears.
Your old motivations no longer work.
Your new ones are not yet born.
You feel suspended between two worlds.
This is the Nigredo — the black stage.
In ordinary life, blackness means depression, confusion, loss.
In alchemy, it means:
All falseness has lost its light.
Look at it carefully.
Previously your ego was constantly illuminated by borrowed light:
“I am important.”
“I am progressing.”
“I understand.”
“I am spiritual.”
These were small candles keeping your inner darkness hidden.
Now they are extinguished.
And for the first time you are facing yourself without interpretation.
This feels like emptiness.
It feels like nothing is happening.
It feels like you have lost the path.
But in reality — for the first time — the real work is possible.
Because now you cannot escape into imagination.
You cannot decorate yourself with spiritual ideas.
You cannot pretend.
The alchemists call this:
the raven’s head
the dark chaos
the philosophical death
It is the state where:
Nothing gives you identity.
And if you remain available — without running back to old distractions — a very subtle transformation begins.
Blackness has a hidden quality.
It absorbs everything.
In this stage:
Your past is being digested.
Your conditionings are decomposing.
Your borrowed knowledge is rotting.
Just as in the soil:
What was once a living plant becomes dark, formless compost.
If you dig up the seed every day to check what is happening, you will say:
“Nothing is happening. Everything is black and dead.”
But underground, life is preparing.
This is why patience becomes the highest virtue here.
Earlier stages required attention.
This stage requires trust.
Because you cannot see what is growing.
You only see what has disappeared.
Many people escape at this point.
They run toward:
new teachings
new techniques
new relationships
new ambitions
Anything to avoid the blackness.
But if you escape, you return to the old cycle — a more refined ego, a more spiritual identity, but still the same structure.
To pass through the gate, you must learn the most difficult meditation:
remaining present when nothing supports you.
No joy.
No vision.
No meaning.
Just silent being.
In that silent being, something extraordinary happens.
Your awareness becomes independent of experience.
Before this, you were aware because something was happening.
Now you are aware even when nothing happens.
This is a revolution.
Because now your consciousness is no longer dependent on light or darkness.
You are the same in clarity and in confusion.
In joy and in emptiness.
You have found a new center.
This is why blackness is called the gate.
It separates:
The seeker who depends on experiences
from
The one who has become stable in being.
The alchemists insist on perfect blackness.
Why perfect?
Because even a small hope can become an escape.
Even a small idea — “Soon something beautiful will happen” — keeps you in the mind.
Perfect blackness means:
You accept the night totally.
You do not wait for the morning.
And in that total acceptance, a miracle occurs:
The night begins to shine.
Not with visible light — but with depth.
A silent richness.
A causeless peace.
You start feeling at home in emptiness.
You start enjoying the absence of identity.
You start discovering that:
When you are nobody, you are vast.
When you are nothing, you are full.
This is the paradox the alchemists hide behind the symbol of blackness:
It is not the absence of light —
it is the womb of light.
All colors are hidden in black.
All forms are hidden in the formless.
All birth comes from the dark.
So the practice for this stage is not to seek light.
It is to remain available in the dark.
When meditation feels empty — remain.
When life feels meaningless — remain.
When you do not know who you are — remain.
No interpretation.
No escape.
Slowly, your eyes — inner eyes — begin to adjust to this night.
And you discover a new kind of seeing.
Not the seeing of objects.
Not the seeing of visions.
The seeing of being itself.
A silent luminosity without contrast.
This is the first appearance of the true light — which can only be born from total darkness.
That is why the old masters said:
“Blessed is the blackness — for it is the passage to the Stone.”
So do not be afraid when everything loses its color.
Do not think you have lost the path.
You have reached the gate.
And if you can sit in this perfect blackness without moving, without becoming, without escaping —
The dawn that comes is not of the sun.
It is of your own eternal awareness.
